Unreleased Demo: "A Shorter Fall from Grace"

"This song was such a pleasure to write because of Kim Carnes," writes co-writer Mark Cawley. "Love her voice on this and she is just the coolest." Cawley lived in L.A. during the furore of Kim's 'Bette Davis Eyes' success, but the pair did not meet until they recorded this track in 1996. "To have her over to the house to write and record this demo was one of my favorite experiences." He stated that the song came close to being recorded as a duet by a number of artists, but remains unrecorded.

LYRICS:

There is a line, so thin,
It leads from heart to heart and back again.
And round and round we go, Just to find
it's over after all this time.

Hearts break when it ends
We go from love to "can't we still be friends?"

It still hurts, and I still ache,
It ain't easier, just a shorter fall from grace.

Just a shorter fall from grace.

We can't go on just the same
I will take the fall but not the blame.
When nothing grows, nothing remains
Like a field without the promise of rain.

Hearts break when it ends
We go from love to "can't we still be friends?"
It still hurts, and I still ache,
It ain't easier, just a shorter fall from grace.

The best intentions, the best of friends.
I wish you the best of everything, for every man.

I close the door and just leave this place
It ain't easier, just a shorter fall from grace.

Hearts break when it ends
We go from love to "can't we still be friends?"
It still hurts, and I still ache,
It ain't easier, just a shorter fall
It ain't easier, just a shorter fall from grace
It's just a shorter fall from grace
A shorter fall from grace
